I’ll never forget our first foster care placement, a sibling set in need of an emergency placement. After a quick phone call, we gave our “yes” to the social worker and the countdown began. Within just a few hours, several signed documents & a visit with the case worker; we had added a few new members to our house and our hearts.

I remember feeling so nervous and overwhelmed preparing to meet these children that were complete strangers to me. That’s when reality hit. I was in the comfort of my home, with my family and my things, feeling this strange uneasiness of the unknown. I started to think, “If this is how I feel, how on earth are these children feeling?” In a matter of hours they had been removed from their homes, had to leave all their belongings behind & say goodbye to their family. Then they were expected to show up at my house and live with me, a stranger, and somehow all of this was supposed to be, okay?!

Within minutes, the doorbell rang, the door swung open & suddenly I was faced with tired, weary eyes of pure innocence. They looked up at me with a light in their eyes that had so clearly been dimmed and said “woah, we get to live in a house?” I never knew the luxury of simply living under a roof until this moment. This is when I knew opening my home to foster children was the best decision I had ever made.

These same children are in our community right now. They need you more than ever to become a foster parent with UMFS and give them a place to call home. I watched our “yes” change lives that day. Are you willing to say yes?
