Evelyn Carol Hanna was born on March 4, 1946, and passed peacefully from this world on Dec. 18, at the age of 78. She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Hanna, and her mother, Roberta Sue St. John Hanna.
A graduate of Prince Edward Academy, over the course of her life Evelyn worked an eclectic mix of jobs: First for the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, where she started as a dispatcher and quickly became a jailer for the female inmates. She was beloved by coworkers and inmates alike. She then became a licensed Private Investigator and later ran locally for public office for Commissioner of the Revenue. A stint as a Mary Kay Consultant won her national recognition by the company, but perhaps her proudest professional accomplishment was as the owner-operator of Evelyn’s Tone ‘n Tan. It was a local business that offered a combination of tanning beds and motorized exercise machines that minimized the strain on joints and the spine. It attracted a diverse clientele and created friendships that lasted decades.
Eventually, Evelyn would find herself employed at Southside Community Hospital working for the Unit Coordinator on the Second floor, then Third and finally the Operating Room. Sadly, health problems and disability caused Evelyn to leave a professional life behind. She eventually, through strength and perseverance, overcame many of those obstacles to lead a full life. A homebody by nature, she spent her remaining years mostly in the company of close family and friends and an assortment of very beloved cats.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Anthony Davis. She is dearly missed.
Family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 22, from 6-8 p.m., at Shorter Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m., in Shorter Funeral home, with interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Farmville.
