Cumberland supervisors wanted to find a way to thank employees for their work over the last year. To do that, the group unanimously voted during their Tuesday, Nov. 12 meeting to give out both a bonus and extra holidays this year.

Under terms of the vote, all full-time employees of the county will get a $500 bonus and all part-time workers will get $250. To earn that, a worker had to be employed by Cumberland County on Nov. 1 and in good standing. According to the financial report, the total impact was an estimated $38,200 to the county budget.

“As a small locality, the folks on our staff are asked to wear multiple hats and I think the extra holidays and year-end bonus, I believe it was tied to performance as well,” Supervisor Bryan Hamlett said. “It’s not just a giveaway. It’s to incentivize good work throughout the year and I think it’s a very small token that we offer to our county staff in appreciation of all the hard work they do year-round.”

In addition to that, Cumberland supervisors also voted during their November meeting to grant two more employee holidays. Cumberland typically follows the calendar established by the Commonwealth of Virginia as it pertains to recognition of employee holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition this year, Cumberland County will give full days off for Thursday, Dec. 26 and Friday, Dec. 27 for all employees. And to be clear, this is in addition to the previously recognized state and county holidays.
