Earlier this month, we spotlighted the work Feeding Farmville does each year. Now the group finds itself in need of help. As they prepare to deliver 1,000 meals on Thanksgiving, Feeding Farmville is in need of volunteers.
If you can organize, plan or make phone calls, you’re welcome. The same goes for anyone who helps pack, deliver meals or is willing to clean up the week of Thanksgiving. Now you can let people know you’re interested in taking part by going to feedingfarmville.org and signing up. You can also call the group at 434-408-1571. Also, if you know someone who could use a meal on Thanksgiving, and lives within 30 miles of Food Lion in Farmville they may sign up for a meal by calling the same number or on the website. One meal per person.
Longwood game bumped back
The Longwood men’s basketball game against Regent University on Sunday, December 1 has been moved up to 1 p.m. The game will be Longwood’s first back in the friendly confines of the Joan Perry Brock Center following four straight games on the road.
By the time most of you have read this, the Lancers will have already played Binghamton on the road. That game is set for Tuesday, Nov. 19 and you can read results on our website. But after that, the team gets on a plane and heads to the Paradise Jam, beginning with UAB on Friday, Nov. 22 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Then the Lancers return for a four-game homestand beginning with Regent on Sunday, December 1 at 1 p.m.
Arvonia resident places in Regionals
One Arvonia resident was among the Hampden-Sydney College runners competing at this year’s NCAA Division III South Regional for Cross Country. Sophomore Haden Von Cannon finished 115th in the field of 158 runners, with a time of 29:24:37. He was one of seven runners representing the Tigers, which as a team placed 17th among the 22 schools in attendance. Hampden-Sydney’s 524 points were their best combined finish at the postseason regional championships.
Tigers finish season with senior celebration
The end result of Saturday’s edition of “The Game” may not have been what Hampden-Sydney hoped for, but there were some bright spots in the 27-6 loss. Vince Luvara finished his first season as the head coach of the Tigers with five wins. That’s tied for third among the 29 head coaches in the 140-year history of the school for wins during their first season. Also, freshman quarterback Wendell Thompson recorded a career-high 133 passing yards and one touchdown in his first college game. This year’s 129th edition of “The Game” was played before a season-high crowd of 10,828, the largest group for the event since 2018, when 11,111 watched.
Saturday was also Senior Day for 21 Tigers, who played their final game on the Hill. That included Jordan Akerson, Joe Ambrosi, Dylan Apple, Jonah Brown, Logan Cohn, Pat Coronado, Trey Craft, Seamus DeVol, JT Diehl, Austin Fernandez, Dylan Huggins, Kyle Lafayette, Sutton Lasso, Walker Marsh, Gabe Menjivar, Joseph Pierre, Jack Shryock, Shane Smith, Elijah Swett, Will Thomas and Brendan Wallace.
