Monday’s event was a celebration, both of those who currently fight for our country and the ones who did so in the past. The Town of Farmville held its annual Veterans Day celebration at Crute Stage, hosted as always by the students and staff of Fuqua School.
It started at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, to pay tribute to the end of World War I. Fighting stopped in the war at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. It was the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Nov. 11 originally became known as Armistice Day, as a way of paying tribute to soldiers who died in the “War to End All Wars”. But after World War II, Congress decided a day was needed to honor veterans from all of America’s conflicts, regardless of when and where they happened.
Students from the Fuqua School Band paid tribute to all of the military branches, performing the Armed Forces Medley, the National Anthem and several other patriotic songs before Silas Blanton took the stage. Blanton serves as Commander of American Legion Post #32 and his focus was on what Veterans Day means, both to those who have served and to America as a country. He talked about the significance of the day, while also praising members of each military branch.
