Recently, Hampden-Sydney College hosted its second annual Student-Alumni 9 for IX Golf Tournament at The Manor Golf Club, uniting students, alumni and supporters to raise awareness for sexual assault prevention, promote healthy relationships and strengthen the College’s commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive campus environment for all. The event blended sportsmanship with a vital cause, making it a powerful platform for education and advocacy.

Before the tournament began, Dr. Melissa Wood, Director of Title IX, Access, and Inclusion welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of the event. Wood articulated the College’s dedication to preventing sexual violence and the need for a collaborative approach to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. She highlighted that the tournament was not merely a sporting event, but a platform to engage the community in meaningful discussions about sexual assault prevention and the cultivation of healthy relationships.

The event was organized by the Office of Title IX, Access, and Inclusion, which leads the College’s initiatives to prevent sexual assault and promote values of consent, respect, and equality. Title IX Prevention & Education Planner, Mrs. Adrienne Traylor, who coordinated the day’s activities, emphasized the importance of education and awareness in the building of healthy relationships. The resources provided at the tournament highlighted the College’s commitment to ongoing prevention, education, and promoting a culture of respect.

A moving moment of the day came when Ms. Renae Mancastroppa, Hampden-Sydney staff member and survivor of sexual assault, courageously shared her story and the impact it has had on her life. Mancastroppa, who has experienced sexual violence multiple times, spoke about her journey toward healing and how men can take a role in prevention. Her emotional story resonated with the crowd, and her message of strength and healing reinforced the importance of the day’s mission.

As the tournament progressed, the camaraderie among participants was palpable, with many engaging in conversations about the day’s mission. The event not only provided an opportunity for friendly competition, but also fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose. Seeing students, alumni, and community members come together for such an important cause was truly inspiring.

While the tournament concluded with awards and recognition, the true focus remained on the cause. The 9 for IX Golf Tournament was an important step, but the work must continue. The Student- Alumni 9 for IX Golf Tournament successfully raised funds for critical prevention and education programs while amplifying the need for continued efforts to promote healthy relationships and to foster a respectful and inclusive campus environment.
