After an investigation on Monday, Oct. 14, the Prince Edward County Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity. During the day, officers and sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at a home on Mountain Creek Road in the Meherrin area. Animal Control had previously received calls and concerns about the welfare of animals on the property, as they alleged that a breeding and selling operation was taking place. 

Officers seized 23 dogs, which are currently being held by County Animal Control pending a custody hearing in Prince Edward County General District Court. According to the court docket, that case is currently set for Tuesday, Oct. 22. Law enforcement officials say the investigation into the operation is still ongoing. 

Chief Animal Control Officer Adam Mumma asked for the public’s understanding while his department manages the veterinary care and placement of these animals. With the County Animal Shelter at maximum capacity, strays and owner surrenders will be on an emergency-only basis until further notice.
