The Southside District Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments got underway on Monday night with no surprises as all higher seeds advanced to Wednesday's semifinal contests.

Locally on the boys side, No. 4 seeded Prince Edward (7-8) edged No. 5 Greensville (6-9) on Monday night at home with a 64-58 victory.

The PE Eagles will move on to face top-seed Brunswick (15-0), which blew out No. 8 seed Bluestone (2-13) 91-43 in Bluestone's final boys basketball game as a Southside District member.

Prince Edward will travel to Brunswick on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Southampton (11-4) cruised past No. 7 seed Powhatan (3-12) 48-30, and will host No. 3 Park View (10-5), which defeated No. 6 Nottoway (6-9) 75-50.

Southampton will host Park View on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of Wednesday's contests will advance to the Southside District Tournament finals, which will be held on Friday night at Greensville County High School, following the girls final, which is slated for a 6 p.m. start.

On the girls side, No. 4 Prince Edward (10-5) got past No. 5 Powhatan (6-9) 54-49 to advance to the semifinal round at Southampton. Southampton (13-2), the regular-season champion, easily dispatched of No. 8 Nottoway (0-15) 66-38, and will host the Lady Eagles on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

In the other half of the bracket, No. 2 seed Brunswick (13-2) had no difficulty in advancing past No. 7 Park View (3-12) 79-42.

The Lady Bulldogs will host No. 3 Greensville (11-4) which defeated No. 6 Bluestone (4-11) 49-33 on Monday night in Emporia.

Brunswick will host Greensville on Wednesday night at 6 p.m., prior to the Brunswick/Prince Edward boys game.

The winners of the semifinal games will advance to Friday's Southside District Tournament Championship game to be held on Friday night at 6 p.m. prior to the boys tournament finals at Greensville County High School in Emporia.

James River District

Entering the James River District Boys Basketball Tournament as the No. 4 seed, Cumberland's boys team advanced to the James River District Tournament semifinals last Friday night with a 77-44 victory over No. 5 seed Central of Lunenburg (0-9). The Dukes (4-5) advance to the JRD Semifinals at regular-season champion, and top tournament seed Amelia (7-1) for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday night.

No. 2 seed Buckingham (6-2) ended the season with a 62-54 victory over Amelia last Thursday night, and will look to win its sixth-straight contest on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against No. 3 seed Randolph-Henry (4-4).

The winners in the semifinal games will advance to the JRD Tournament Championship Game on Saturday night at the highest remaining seed. The game will take place immediately following the JRD Junior Varsity Title Game.

No. 5 Cumberland (2-7) traveled to No. 4 Buckingham (3-6) last Friday and came away with a mild upset over the Lady Knights. The Lady Dukes won 54-49, and advanced to the JRD Semifinals, and were scheduled to take on JRD Regular-Season Champion and Tournament top seed Central of Lunenburg (7-1) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Victoria.

No. 2 Amelia (5-3) was scheduled to host No. 3 Randolph-Henry (4-4) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on the other side of the bracket.

The semifinal winners will advance to the JRD Tournament title game to take place on Friday night at the highest remaining seed, following the conclusion of the JRD Junior Varsity Championship game.
