More awards for Hampden-Sydney: Players, coach honored

Some members of this year’s Hampden-Sydney College basketball team, along with their head coach, were honored by the state this past week. Caleb Kimbrough, the fifth-year head coach of the Tigers, has been voted the 2023-24 Virginia Sports Information Director’s (VaSID) College Division Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Also, graduate Davidson Hubbard was selected as the Player of the Year, while senior team captain Adam Brazil was voted First Team All-State along with Hubbard.

Davidson Hubbard started 33 of 34 games while averaging 14.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 29.0 minutes … shooting 47% (203-433) from the field, 32% (48-151) on three-point field goals and 82% (54-66) at the free throw line. He added 31 steals and 14 blocks, and was the Hampden-Sydney leader in points (508), scoring average, field goals, field goal attempts, rebounds (245), rebound average, offensive rebounds (68) and defensive rebounds (177). Hubbard posted career-highs of 31 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, four blocks, four three-pointers and 37 minutes, along with a season-high three steals.

He had 27 double-figure scoring games, including one 30-point game among eight 20-point games, and led the team in scoring 13 times and in rebounding 21 times with five double-doubles and a team-best 19 dunks.

Hubbard was named National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America Second Team, D3hoops.com All-America Third Team, NABC All-District 6 First Team, D3hoops.com All-Region 6 First Team, as well as All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) First Team. Additionally, Davidson was named to the Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List, was the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Division III National Player of the Week and ODAC Player of the Week, while named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week, and was also chosen as the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic MVP.

Adam Brazil started 33 of 34 games while averaging 13.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 32.2 minutes … shooting 42% (158-378) from the field, 40% (76-188) on three-point field goals and 88% (66-75) at the free throw line. He added 31 steals and was the team leader in three-pointers, three-point attempts, three-point percentage, free throw percentage, assists (127) and minutes (1096).

Brazil posted career-highs of 27 points, 10 assists, five three-pointers and 38 minutes, along with season-highs of seven rebounds and four steals. He had 22 double-figure scoring games, a team-best 10 20-point games, and led the team in scoring 10 times and in assists 17 times with one double-double (assists). Brazil was named NABC Division III All-America Third Team, NABC All-District 6 First Team, D3hoops.com All-Region 6 First Team, ODAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, All-ODAC First Team and was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team and the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic All-Tournament Team.

He led the ODAC in three-point percentage and assist/turnover ratio (2.76, 17th nationally), ranking third in free throw percentage, fifth in assists per game and seventh in three-pointers per game (2.2). Additionally, Adam was named to the 2023-24 Academic All-America® Men’s Basketball Second Team as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) for NCAA Division III, and is a two-time member of the CSC Academic All-District® Men’s Basketball Team (2022-23, 2023-24).

Caleb Kimbrough led Hampden-Sydney to a season to remember … finishing as the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball National Championship Runner-Up. The veteran and talented Tigers completed their storybook campaign with a final overall record of 31-3, a new school record for wins, and won their record 11th ODAC Tournament Championship while playing in a record 16th ODAC Tournament Title contest.

It was the Garnet and Grey’s finest season in 25 years (1998-99, National Runner-Up, 29-3), attaining their first 30-win season and only the sixth 25-win season in program history, also the 17th overall 20-win season and the second consecutive 20-win effort to mark the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons.

Coach Kimbrough was voted the NABC District 6 Coach of the Year for the second-straight year, and won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach with a 71-47 road win at Virginia Wesleyan University on February 14, and is currently 83-38 (.686) at the College, ranking seventh among the 19 head coaches in the program’s tradition-rich history in wins, while his current winning percentage ranks second.
