Two teams from Prince Edward County will be competing tonight for state titles, as both the Baseball Majors All-Stars and Softball Debs All-Stars are in their respective finals.
For the Debs, this tournament has included an offensive explosion. They’ve gone undefeated, scoring an average of 13 runs per game. And that total likely would have been higher, but one of the wins was by forfeit, due to Powhatan attempting an illegal substitution. Things got started on Friday, as Prince Edward beat Dinwiddie 15-2. The next morning the Debs suited up against tournament host Amherst and won there too, 14-5. The last game of the evening on Saturday ended with the forfeit win, advancing Prince Edward into Sunday’s semi-final against Halifax. The Debs handled their business there as well, winning 11-9.
So now it comes down to this, as the Debs will head to Madison Heights tonight at 6 p.m. to take on Powhatan one more time for the state title. If the Debs win, they’re the state champs. If Prince Edward loses, then the two teams will turn right around and play late into the night, with the winner of that second game winning the title.
Prince Edward Majors ready to compete
The Majors have a similar story to tell after this weekend. Undefeated in the Virginia Dixie Youth Baseball Division 2 State Tournament, they beat Buckingham on Friday 7-1 in 6 innings. Then they turned around and smashed Dinwiddie American 15-5 in 5 innings the following day. That gave the Majors a bye on Sunday, as they advanced to the state championship.
To win that title, they’ll take on Dinwiddie American for a second time tonight, with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. in Dinwiddie. If Prince Edward wins that game, they’re the Division 2 state champs. If they lose, the two teams will play one more time.
