From fireworks to gospel music concerts, there’s a lot happening over the next week in Prince Edward, Buckingham and Cumberland counties. Here’s a look.

JUNE 29 

LOCAL AUTHOR VISITS – Buckingham author Susan Auten will be at the Farmville library on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 2 p.m. Auten will be talking about her two newest books, One Last Thing and Not A Thing, both new additions to her Seddledowne series. Auten will do a reading, followed by a discussion with the audience and refreshments. 

GOSPEL MUSIC CONCERT – The Springfield Travelers of Meherrrin will hold a gospel music event on Saturday, June 29, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. That’ll be held at Prince Edward County High School, located at 35 Eagle Drive in Farmville. Joining the Travelers will be The Royal Supremes, the Mighty Southerners, Music Ministry for Christ and CEJ Gospel Singers. 

JUNE 30 – JULY 2

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Glenn Memorial Baptist Church in Prospect will hold Vacation Bible School on June 30, July 1 and July 2 at the church. The theme will be “God Bless the USA”, praising God for our country and His protection. Sessions begin each evening at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. There will be music, Bible teaching, games and snacks. The church is located at 146 Harris Creek Road in Prospect. 

JUNE 30 

FAMILY FUN DAY – The Farmville SDA Pathfinders Club will hold a Family Fun Day on Sunday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wilck’s Lake Island. There will be bounce houses, face painting, kids games and prizes, plus live music and food. 

MUSICAL WORSHIP – A musical worship service will be held at Union Grove Baptist Church, located at 2006 County Line Road on Sunday, June 30. That’ll take place at 11 a.m. with lunch at noon. The musical guest will be Tobacco Road from Lunenburg County. 

FAMILY AND FRIENDS DAY – Family and Friends Day will be held at Triumph Baptist Church on Sunday, June 30, beginning at 11 a.m. The guest preacher will be Rev. Lloyd Wesley and the Praise Team Choir will sing. A fellowship luncheon will be held after the service. The church is located on Darlington Heights Road in Prince Edward County. 

MEN & WOMEN’S DAY – Union R.Z.U.A. Church will celebrate Men’s and Women’s Day on Sunday, June 30, during a 3 p.m. service. The guest speaker will be Rev. Leslie Evans and the theme is “Men and Women Accomplishing God’s Word”. Men are asked to wear dark colors and women bright colors if possible. Dinner will be served afterward. 

MISSION DAY – The Bright Hope Center in Cumberland will hold Mission Day on June 30 at 3 p.m. The guest speaker will be Pastor Cetric Gayles, accompanied by his choir from Cornerstone Baptist Church. 

JULY 1

POTLUCK DINNER – The Curdsville Community Center will hold a potluck dinner on Monday, July 1, followed by a program from Stacey Hafley, Education Support Specialist with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. She will be discussing upcoming programs at Holiday Lake. 

JULY 2 – 4 

REVIVAL – St. Douglas Baptist Church, located at 151 Nelson Lane, will have revival July 2 through July 4, beginning at 7 p.m. nightly. Rev. Robert Walker, Pastor of Forest Baptist Church in Meherrin, will deliver the message, with different choirs each night. 

JULY 3

FIREWORKS AFTER DARK – The town of Farmville will hold its annual fireworks celebration on Wednesday, July 3. The event will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Main Street in the downtown area. There will be a children’s play area, music and of course, fireworks celebrating the birth of the nation. 

JULY 5

BLOOD DRIVE – Centra Southside Community Hospital will hold a blood drive on Friday, July 5 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. That’ll take place in the hospital’s First Floor Conference Room, with appointments being set up by calling Kerry Mossler at 434-315-3007. All blood types are needed, but especially O negative, A negative and B negative. 

JULY 6 

FISH FRY – The Ladies of Royalty of Farmville will sponsor an “Independence Day Fish Fry” on Saturday, July 6, beginning at 11 a.m. It will be held at the Masonic Lodge, located at 415 Griffin Boulevard in Farmville. The menu includes fish, fries and a drink for $10, a fish sandwich for $5 and drinks alone for $1.

MISSION FUNDRAISER – Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church, located at 14 Fitzgerald Road in Cumberland, will hold a chicken BBQ fundraiser for local missions on Saturday, July 6. The chicken will be ready by noon, with dinners going for $12 and chicken halves for $8. You can preorder by calling 804-492-5151. 

INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION – Pamplin will hold its 6th annual Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 6, running from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the historic Pamplin City Train Depot. That’s at 115 N. Main Street in Pamplin. There will be a free meal of hot dogs, homemade baked beans, coleslaw, grilled veggies, chips, watermelon and chookies, then the Farm Use String Band will take the stage, with country dance tunes and dance callers, beginning at 6 p.m. 

MEHERRIN FOURTH OF JULY – This year’s Meherrin Fourth of July celebration will be held on Saturday, July 6, beginning at 11 a.m. with the Meherrin Fire and Rescue stew sale. The rest of the 38th annual event, including food trucks, music and fireworks, takes place at 102 Moores Ordinary Road. This part starts at 4 p.m., with fireworks happening after the sun goes down. 

JULY 5 – 7 

FAMILY REUNION – The Henry and Rosa Scott-Allen Family Reunion will be held July 5-7 in Farmville, at Southern Pines at Wedgewood. This will be the first family reunion for all descendants of Henry and Rosa. Only registered guests will be allowed and to register, call Carolyn Cox at 804-615-4183. 

JULY 7

HOMECOMING – St. Douglas Baptist Church, located at 151 Nelson Lane, will hold homecoming service on Sunday, July 7, beginning at 11 a.m. Worship will also be live streamed on the church’s Facebook page. 

VISIT WITH SISTER OPAL – Sister Opal Lee will be on hand on Sunday, July 7 at Jericho Baptist Church, during the 11 a.m. service. Lee is known as the grandmother of Juneteenth because of her efforts to make it a national holiday. 

JULY 7-11

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – The Farmville United Methodist Church will hold Vacation Bible School for children ages five to 11 from July 7 to July 11. “Camp Firelight” as this year’s event will be called, is a five-evening summer camp adventure, running from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each night, with dinner included. JULY 10 

PORCH SALE – The Piedmont Area Veterans Council will hold its second Porch Sale on Wednesday, July 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. That’ll be held at 2650 W. Third Street in Farmville, with clothes, purses and other items available. 

JULY 11

CHEESY THURSDAY – The Piedmont Area Veterans Council will hold a ‘Cheesy Thursday’ fundraiser at Merk’s Place on Thursday, July 11. That’ll run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with silent auctions and raffles. 

JULY 15

NAACP MEETING – The Prince Edward branch of the NAACP will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 15 at the Moton Museum in Farmville. 

JULY 20 

CRUISE-IN – The Heart of Virginia Classic Auto Club will hold its monthly cruise-in on July 20 at the parking lot by Tractor Supply in Farmville. That will run from 5 p.m. until dusk, with a 50/50 raffle. Residents are invited to bring their classic or antique automobiles or simply stop by to have a look. 

JULY 21

PASTOR’S AIDE DAY – Midway will celebrate their Pastor’s Aide Ministry during morning worship on Sunday, July 21. The guest minister will be Rev. Eddie Chastain and the church is located at 837 Guinea Road in Farmville.

SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICES – The congregations of Cumberland and Guinea Presbyterian Churches hold services every Sunday. The Guinea service is at 10 a.m. at the church, located at 1176 Guinea Road in Farmville. The Cumberland service is held at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, beginning every Sunday at 11:15 a.m. 

TRIUMPH BAPTIST CHURCH – Triumph Baptist Church, located at 2756 Darlington Heights Road in Prince Edward County, welcomes everyone to services each Sunday. Sunday school at 10:00 a.m. followed by Prayer/Praise and worship service at 11:00 a.m. Worship Service is live streamed on the church Facebook page.  Rev. Morris Garner is the pastor.

CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH – Cumberland Presbyterian Church, located at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, welcomes a new pastor, Jeffery Schroeder. Sunday School is at 10 a.m., with worship services at 11:15 a.m. Outside worship is available, by tuning to 1620 AM on the radio. 

EXERCISE CLASS – Payne Memorial Church, located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland, holds an exercise class every Monday and Thursday at 9 a.m. It’s free and all are welcome to attend.

HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP – Maysville Baptist Church, located at 13327 W. James Anderson Highway in Buckingham Courthouse, hosts a Homeschool Support Group the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The purpose of this group is to provide support and connection for homeschooling families in the area. There is no childcare provided. Anyone with questions can call 434-414-5292. 

ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT – An Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 1301 Milnwood Avenue in Farmville. NEW BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH – New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin will hold worship services on the first and third Sundays of the month at 10:45 a.m. Sunday School will be held every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

HERITAGE BAPTIST CHURCH – Heritage Baptist Church, located at 700 Milnwood Road in Farmville holds services each Sunday morning, with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Worship Service at 11 a.m. A fellowship with donuts and coffee is held from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend. 

SOUP FOR THE SOUL – Cumberland Presbyterian Church will hold “Soup for the Soul” the third Tuesday of every month, beginning at 10 a.m. Church members prepare soup to be taken out to those who need a visit. CONFIDENT WOMEN MINISTRY — The Confident Women Ministry Worship Service will be held every Sunday at 3 p.m. online, via a conference call. The phone number to call in is 1-657-390-7012.

FARMVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH — Farmville United Methodist Church located at 212 High Street welcomes everyone to worship each Sunday. Sunday school begins at 9 a.m., followed by worship at 10 a.m.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH FARMVILLE — First Baptist Church located at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in Farmville hosts Sunday worship at 11 a.m. each Sunday. The Rev. Dr. James P. Ashton leads the services. At this time, face masks and social distancing are required inside of the sanctuary.

JERICHO BAPTIST CHURCH — Jericho Baptist Church located at 615 Franklin St., Farmville will host praise and worship in the sanctuary at 11 a.m. every Sunday. You can also join the church via Facebook Live, WFLO Radio 870AM or www.wflo.net. Rev. Dr. James H. Taylor III is the pastor.

SPEARS MOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH — Spears Mountain Baptist Church is located at 106 Meadow Creek Road in Buckingham. Sunday Worship Service is at 10 a.m. Pastor Robert C. Wilson.

DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING — The Buckingham County Democratic Committee meets at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Agricultural Building in Buckingham County. The meetings are held at 54 Administration Lane in Buckingham, off Route 60. The Ag Building is next to the Arts Council Building.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF DILLWYN — First Baptist Church of Dillwyn located at 16980 Oak St., Dillwyn hosts Sunday school at 10 a.m. and worship service at 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

PIEDMONT CHURCH OF CHRIST — Piedmont Church of Christ located at 1405 North Main St., Farmville holds Bible study at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, and the church service starts 10:30 a.m. They have Bible study on Sunday nights at 5 p.m. and a Bible study at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights. The church has a free clothing giveaway on Thursdays from 1- 3 p.m. weather permitting.

PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH — Pisgah Baptist Church located at 202 Pisgah Road, Rice welcomes everyone each Sunday for Worship. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. and worship starts at 11 a.m.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP — Farmville United Methodist Church (FUMC) is offering a Grief Support Group for those who have suffered recent losses or losses long ago. This is an ecumenical group welcoming anyone who has experienced a loss. The group meets at 2 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at FUMC, 212 High St. Participation in the discussion while attending the sessions is optional. CHURCH SERVICES — Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland offers three options to worship on Sundays: inside service at 10 a.m., masks are optional; 10 a.m. radio parking lot service on 89.7 FM. and YouTube service later Sunday afternoon. 

FARMVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH — Farmville Baptist Church at 132 N. Main St. holds Bible study at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday, followed at 11 a.m. by worship. Worship services are held in person and broadcast via Zoom. Specific details and more information can be found on the church website at www.farmvillebaptist.org. 

FARMVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH — Farmville Presbyterian Church at 200 West Third St. holds in-service worship at 11 a.m. every Sunday with Rev. Dr. Pete Smith. The church also livestreams their church Facebook page and posts services on YouTube (search for the church name). FOOD DISTRIBUTION — Delma’s Pantry in Cumberland County will have curbside food distribution at Delma’s Pantry the second, third and fourth Fridays of the month at 9:30 a.m. each Friday. Senior boxes will be given out at the distributions.

MEMOIR WRITING GROUP – The group, which meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, encourages new people to join. The meetings take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the Farmville Library’s main meeting room. Call Joan at (434)-607-1576 for more information. 

WORSHIP AND THE WORD – Appomattox Assembly of God meets every Sunday for a Worship and the Word service, beginning at 11 a.m. The church, led by new pastor Mark Bartow, is located at 1225 Confederate Boulevard in Appomattox.
