Juneteenth is right around the corner, but because it’s in the middle of the week, most of the communities in our areas will hold celebrations this Saturday. It’s also summertime, so there’s Vacation Bible School events popping up and that’s just the start of what we have in this week’s calendar.

JUNE 15

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Mt. Zion Baptist Church, located at 6277 Cartersville Road in New Canton, will have its Vacation Bible School on Saturday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme this year is “Gone Fishing”. 

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION – High Bridge Baptist Church will celebrate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be gospel music, inspirational poetry, games, a bounce house, cotton candy, popcorn, sports, hot dogs, burgers and drinks. 

ROAD CLEAN-UP – The Friends of Heart Space Healing will hold a road clean-up Saturday, June 15 for Double Bridges Road in Meherrin, beginning at 10 a.m. Those interested are asked to meet at 5104 Double Bridges Road up at the house. And afterwards, to bring a dish to share for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Bring work gloves and water. 

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION – The Mary E. Branch Heritage Center will host their Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is located at 632 South Main Street and the event will include food, music, a kids zone, vendors and valuable information for the community. People are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to support the FACES food pantry. 

JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL – The Cumberland County NAACP will present its Juneteenth Festival on Saturday, June 15 from noon to 6 p.m. That’ll take place at the Bright Hope Center.

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION – Forward 2020 will hold its fifth annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Buckingham County, at the Buckingham Elementary School. That’s located at 40 Frank Harris Road in Dillwyn. There will be a vendor market, music and food, along with other activities. There will also be a mobile mammogram unit from UVA Health at the event. 

GOSPEL CONCERT – Jericho Baptist Church, located at 615 Franklin Street in Farmville, will hold a gospel concert Saturday, June 15, beginning at 3 p.m. The CEJ Gospel Singers and the Johnson Trio will be featured. 

JUNE 16

FATHER’S DAY PROGRAM – High Bridge Baptist Church will hold its annual Father’s Day program on Sunday, June 16, during the 10 a.m. service. The guest preacher will be Rev. Kevin Callahan.       

MEN’S DAY – Mercy Seat Baptist Church will be observing Men’s Day on Sunday, June 16 at 3 p.m. The musical guests will be the New Beginning Singers. 

JUNE 17

NAACP MEETING – The Prince Edward branch of the NAACP will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 17 at the Moton Museum in Farmville. The speaker will be Kim Allen, Director of Social Services for Prince Edward County. 

JUNE 20 

PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT – The Friends of Twin Lakes State Park will sponsor a Photo Scavenger Hunt on Thursday, June 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the park. A list of items to photograph will be available at Shelter 1 in the Day Use section of the park. Prizes will be awarded based on the number of items photographed. The event is free and Twin Lakes is located at 788 Twin Lakes Road in Green Bay. 

FRIENDS OF TWIN LAKES MEET – The next meeting of the Friends of Twin Lakes State Park will be held on Thursday, June 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Shelter 1 in the park. New members and interested people are welcome to attend. Twin Lakes State Park is located at 788 Lakes Road in Green Bay. 

JUNE 22

FISH FRY – The Piedmont Area Veterans Council will hold a fish fry on Saturday, June 22 from noon to 4 p.m. The event will be held at 2650 West Third Street, at a cost of $15 per plate. A plate includes fish, sides and drink. For tickets, call the PAVC office at 434-392-4142. 

CLASS REUNION – The Prince Edward High Class of 2004 will hold its 20th Class Reunion on June 22, beginning at 4 p.m. In order to get the location and other details, RSVP to peclassof2004@gmail.com. This will be a field day and cookout. 

JUNE 23 

CHORUS ANNIVERSARY – Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland will celebrate the 24th anniversary of their Male Chorus on Sunday, June 23 at 3 p.m. 

JUNE 23-27

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church, located at 14 Fitzgerald Road in Cumberland, will hold Vacation Bible School from Sunday, June 23 to Thursday, June 27. On June 23, it’ll run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. From June 24 to June 27, it’ll run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. nightly. The program is for children ages 3 to 12. 

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Cedar Hill Baptist Church, located at 3932 Bell Road in Dillwyn, will hold Vacation Bible School from Sunday, June 23 to Thursday, June 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. nightly. 

JUNE 24-26

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Thomas Chapel will host Vacation Bible School from June 24 to June 26. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each night with dinner, arts and crafts, games, music, bible stories and a class for adults. Thomas Chapel is located at 1313 Cartersville Road.  

JUNE 30 

FAMILY FUN DAY – The Farmville SDA Pathfinders Club will hold a Family Fun Day on Sunday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wilck’s Lake Island. There will be bounce houses, face painting, kids games and prizes, plus live music and food. 

MEN & WOMEN’S DAY – Union R.Z.U.A. Church will celebrate Men’s and Women’s Day on Sunday, June 30, during a 3 p.m. service. The guest speaker will be Rev. Leslie Evans and the theme is “Men and Women Accomplishing God’s Word”. Men are asked to wear dark colors and women bright colors if possible. Dinner will be served afterward. 

JULY 6 

FISH FRY – The Ladies of Royalty of Farmville will sponsor an “Independence Day Fish Fry” on Saturday, July 6, beginning at 11 a.m. It will be held at the Masonic Lodge, located at 415 Griffin Boulevard in Farmville. The menu includes fish, fries and a drink for $10, a fish sandwich for $5 and drinks alone for $1. 

INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION – Pamplin will hold its 6th annual Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 6, running from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the historic Pamplin City Train Depot. That’s at 115 N. Main Street in Pamplin. There will be a free meal of hot dogs, homemade baked beans, coleslaw, grilled veggies, chips, watermelon and chookies, then the Farm Use String Band will take the stage, with country dance tunes and dance callers, beginning at 6 p.m. 

JULY 7-11

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – The Farmville United Methodist Church will hold Vacation Bible School for children ages five to 11 from July 7 to July 11. “Camp Firelight” as this year’s event will be called, is a five-evening summer camp adventure, running from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each night, with dinner included. SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICES – The congregations of Cumberland and Guinea Presbyterian Churches hold services every Sunday. The Guinea service is at 10 a.m. at the church, located at 1176 Guinea Road in Farmville. The Cumberland service is held at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, beginning every Sunday at 11:15 a.m. 

TRIUMPH BAPTIST CHURCH – Triumph Baptist Church, located at 2756 Darlington Heights Road in Prince Edward County, welcomes everyone to services each Sunday. Sunday school at 10:00 a.m. followed by Prayer/Praise and worship service at 11:00 a.m. Worship Service is live streamed on the church Facebook page.  Rev. Morris Garner is the pastor.

CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH – Cumberland Presbyterian Church, located at 1835 Cumberland Road in Farmville, welcomes a new pastor, Jeffery Schroeder. Sunday School is at 10 a.m., with worship services at 11:15 a.m. Outside worship is available, by tuning to 1620 AM on the radio. 

EXERCISE CLASS – Payne Memorial Church, located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland, holds an exercise class every Monday and Thursday at 9 a.m. It’s free and all are welcome to attend.

HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP – Maysville Baptist Church, located at 13327 W. James Anderson Highway in Buckingham Courthouse, hosts a Homeschool Support Group the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The purpose of this group is to provide support and connection for homeschooling families in the area. There is no childcare provided. Anyone with questions can call 434-414-5292. 

ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT – An Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 1301 Milnwood Avenue in Farmville. NEW BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH – New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin will hold worship services on the first and third Sundays of the month at 10:45 a.m. Sunday School will be held every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

HERITAGE BAPTIST CHURCH – Heritage Baptist Church, located at 700 Milnwood Road in Farmville holds services each Sunday morning, with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Worship Service at 11 a.m. A fellowship with donuts and coffee is held from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend. 

SOUP FOR THE SOUL – Cumberland Presbyterian Church will hold “Soup for the Soul” the third Tuesday of every month, beginning at 10 a.m. Church members prepare soup to be taken out to those who need a visit. FARMVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH — Farmville United Methodist Church located at 212 High Street welcomes everyone to worship each Sunday. Sunday school begins at 9 a.m., followed by worship at 10 a.m.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH FARMVILLE — First Baptist Church located at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in Farmville hosts Sunday worship at 11 a.m. each Sunday. The Rev. Dr. James P. Ashton leads the services. At this time, face masks and social distancing are required inside of the sanctuary.

JERICHO BAPTIST CHURCH — Jericho Baptist Church located at 615 Franklin St., Farmville will host praise and worship in the sanctuary at 11 a.m. every Sunday. You can also join the church via Facebook Live, WFLO Radio 870AM or www.wflo.net. Rev. Dr. James H. Taylor III is the pastor.

SPEARS MOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH — Spears Mountain Baptist Church is located at 106 Meadow Creek Road in Buckingham. Sunday Worship Service is at 10 a.m. Pastor Robert C. Wilson.

DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING — The Buckingham County Democratic Committee meets at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Agricultural Building in Buckingham County. The meetings are held at 54 Administration Lane in Buckingham, off Route 60. The Ag Building is next to the Arts Council Building.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF DILLWYN — First Baptist Church of Dillwyn located at 16980 Oak St., Dillwyn hosts Sunday school at 10 a.m. and worship service at 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

PIEDMONT CHURCH OF CHRIST — Piedmont Church of Christ located at 1405 North Main St., Farmville holds Bible study at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, and the church service starts 10:30 a.m. They have Bible study on Sunday nights at 5 p.m. and a Bible study at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights. The church has a free clothing giveaway on Thursdays from 1- 3 p.m. weather permitting.

PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH — Pisgah Baptist Church located at 202 Pisgah Road, Rice welcomes everyone each Sunday for Worship. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. and worship starts at 11 a.m.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP — Farmville United Methodist Church (FUMC) is offering a Grief Support Group for those who have suffered recent losses or losses long ago. This is an ecumenical group welcoming anyone who has experienced a loss. The group meets at 2 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at FUMC, 212 High St. Participation in the discussion while attending the sessions is optional. CHURCH SERVICES — Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland offers three options to worship on Sundays: inside service at 10 a.m., masks are optional; 10 a.m. radio parking lot service on 89.7 FM. and YouTube service later Sunday afternoon. 

FARMVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH — Farmville Baptist Church at 132 N. Main St. holds Bible study at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday, followed at 11 a.m. by worship. Worship services are held in person and broadcast via Zoom. Specific details and more information can be found on the church website at www.farmvillebaptist.org. 

FARMVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH — Farmville Presbyterian Church at 200 West Third St. holds in-service worship at 11 a.m. every Sunday with Rev. Dr. Pete Smith. The church also livestreams their church Facebook page and posts services on YouTube (search for the church name). FOOD DISTRIBUTION — Delma’s Pantry in Cumberland County will have curbside food distribution at Delma’s Pantry the second, third and fourth Fridays of the month at 9:30 a.m. each Friday. Senior boxes will be given out at the distributions.

VETERANS SERVICES — The American Legion Accredited Veterans Service Officers are available to see veterans and their family members at the Farmville VFW from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Veteran Service Officers may be reached at (434) 414-6504.

OLD GREEN BAPTIST — Old Green Baptist Church holds outdoor and indoor worship services at 11 a.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month until further notice. The Rev. Samuel F. Trent is the pastor.

MEMOIR WRITING GROUP – The group, which meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, encourages new people to join. The meetings take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the Farmville Library’s main meeting room. Call Joan at (434)-607-1576 for more information. 

WORSHIP AND THE WORD – Appomattox Assembly of God meets every Sunday for a Worship and the Word service, beginning at 11 a.m. The church, led by new pastor Mark Bartow, is located at 1225 Confederate Boulevard in Appomattox.
