Golf team ties for fifth at Cochran

The nationally-ranked No. 21 Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) golf team posted a final round of 302 on Tuesday for a 54-hole team score of 906 (303-301-302) to finish in a tie for fifth among 18 teams at the Cochran Collegiate played at the Colonial Country Club in Cordova, Tennessee located near Memphis. Freshman Jack Barnes led the Tigers with his 75-72-75–222 on the par 72, 7,037-yard layout that tied for eighth individually among the 90 collegiate golfers.
Barnes earned his fourth Top 10 finish with 15 pars during his final round and was followed in the event by junior Nick Rubino (71-78-76–225, T-18th), senior Tommy Bishop (79-75-75–229, T-31st), along with juniors John Hutcheson (78-76-76–230, T-36th) and Rece Lott (F(79-79-81–239, T-70th). Rubino earned his sixth Top 20 finish (three Top Five efforts) and had two birdies and 10 pars on the final day. Bishop had two birdies and 11 pars. Hutcheson and Lott each had two birdies and 10 pars.
Barnes also finished first among the tournament field in pars (41), tied for first in eagles (1) and tied for seventh in par 4 scoring (4.13, +4). He had the rare eagle during round two, driving the green on the 320-yard, par 4 ninth hole, before draining an 84-foot putt for the eagle two. Rubino tied for second in birdies (11) and par 5 scoring (4.67, -4). Hutcheson tied for fourth in par 3 scoring (3.00, E). Bishop tied for 12th in par 4 scoring (4.20, +6).
The tournament field featured seven teams ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest NCAA Division III Men’s Golf rankings, including the No. 21 Tigers, and five others among the top 41 overall. The Garnet & Grey tied for fifth with No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan University and No. 25 Christopher Newport University. No. 8 Huntingdon (AL) College won the event with its 293-288-292–873, while HC’s Jack Burr took individual medalist honors at 72-72-69–213.
H-SC will play again at the 2024 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships on April 28-30 on The Green Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg.
