Charles Lane, Sr., 91

JANUARY 4 – Charles Franklin Lane Sr., 91, of Farmville, passed away Friday, December 31, 2010, in Lynchburg. He was born December 10, 1919 in Knox County, TN, a son of the late Charles Stephenson and Nilla Daisy Reaves Lane.

Mr. Lane received his A.B. and M.S. Degrees from the University of Tennessee and his Ph.D. Degree from Northwestern University. He was a professor of Geography and Geology for 35 years at Longwood College. He served as president and Journal editor of the Virginia Geographical Society; State coordinator for the National Council of Geographic Education; managing editor of the Virginia Journal of Science; chairman of the Virginia Resource-Use Educational Council; president and secretary-treasurer of the Virginia Social Science Association. He was a member of the Lion's Club for over 40 years, serving as president of the Farmville Lion's Club two different years and as secretary for 10 years. He was also a very active member of the Farmville United Methodist Church where he held many positions over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Ruth Roberts Lane; children, Charles F. Lane Jr. and wife, Denise of Glen Allen, Robert R. Lane of Shelby, NC, and Vicki Marie Lane Fulcher and husband, Rick of Farmville; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul W. and James W. Lane.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, January 4, at Farmville United Methodist Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.
