Elizabeth Irene Hatchell Bowman, 83 of Green Bay, passed away on Sunday, April 7, at Johnston- Willis Hospital. She was born in Mecklenburg County on March 7, 1941 to the late Thomas Lacy Hatchell and Edna Irene Cliborne Hatchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Rita S. Berry; son-in-law, David Berry and step-father, Charles Clifford Blanchard.
“Irene” was a member of Burkeville Baptist Church and loved her church family immensely. She always put her family and friends first; making sure to send a card for every occasion or prepare a meal for anyone in need. Prior to their decline in health, she and her husband loved to travel and enjoyed exploring many parts of the world. Irene loved gardening and always had the most beautiful yard. She loved all animals, especially her sweet and devoted dog, Gabbie.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde Bowman; her son, Edward R. Shorter Jr. and wife, Cheri; grandchildren, Trae Shorter (Jessica) and Matthew Ryan Shorter (Amanda); her four great grandchildren, Caydence Marie Shorter, Lane Hudson Shorter, Colburn Ramsey Shorter and Riley Faith Shorter; her chosen sister, Karen Mitchell Shinabeck, and chosen brother, Kenneth Mitchell.
Irene was additionally blessed with three devout caregivers for she and her husband Clyde; all of whom became a part of her family and that she loved dearly.
Per her wishes, due to her husband’s health condition, there will be no burial service. Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects at their home in Green Bay. In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to the Burkeville Baptist Church or Meherrin SPCA.
