Elinor Shepard Purvis Harvey, of Dillwyn, died March 16, at Cottingham Nursing Home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Elinor was born in Buckingham County on June 19, 1924. She was the widow of Cale Cushing Harvey Jr. and is survived by two sons, Cale Cushing Harvey III (Noreen) of Weiser, Idaho, and Philip Mason Harvey (Debbie) of Loveland, Ohio. She is also survived by four grandchildren; Aaron Harvey (Karen) of McCall, Idaho; Justine Krebs (Chris) of Olympia, Washington; Kate Parson (Carl) of Lebanon, Ohio and Philip Harvey (Melanie-fiancé) of Loveland, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren: including Walker and Cooper Harvey of McCall, Idaho, Bear and Sawyer Krebs of Olympia, Washington, Chase Kemme of Lebanon, Ohio, and two step-great-grandchildren, Sydney and Cayden Parson of Lebanon, Ohio.
Elinor was active throughout her life in church and community service spanning the places she lived in Ohio, Virginia and the state of Washington. While living in Dillwyn, she was twice President of the Woman’s Club of Buckingham, twice President of Dillwyn Garden Club and served as Chairman of the Board for White Hall Methodist Church. Her hobbies included bridge, creative writing and nature.
Elinor was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, proudly serving her country on active duty in the Atlantic Fleet Bureau of Personnel in Norfolk.
A visitation will be at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn on March 30 from 10 a.m. to noon. After the visitation, a graveside service for the family only will be held at Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery at Sheppards, at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to White Hall Church, P O Box 891, Dillwyn, VA 23936 or to Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o David Wise, 606 Allen Rosen Road, Dillwyn, VA 23936.
