Cody Youngblood, Director of Preservation and Collections at Red Hill in Brookneal, was guest speaker during the February meeting of the Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, which was held at the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library.
The program, titled “Patrick Henry: His Last Days and Illnesses”, focused on how early medicine treated various ailments of Henry. “His doctors employed various treatments that sometimes helped but sometimes made the patient worse. In particular, Mr. Henry’s physician Dr. Cabel treated Patrick Henry with liquid mercury which gave him relief but also caused a quick death.”
“Youngblood went on to describe the mourning clothes which were worn by wives after the death of their husbands, as well as, hair jewelry, burial clothes and the final monument and grave of Patrick Henry at Red Hill.”
