Margaret S. Carter, 97, passed away on March 12 in Farmville. She was born in Buckingham County, the daughter of Edith Eppert Stanley and Melvin Gentry Stanley. 

Margaret is survived by her two sons, Charles M. Carter Jr. of Weems, wife Karen, and Michael S. Carter of Chesterfield, wife Brenda; four grandchildren; Katie Bavuso of Kilmarnock, husband Dr. Salvatore, John Carter of Henrico, and Robert Dodge of Midlothian, wife Jessica and Lisa Biggs of Henrico, husband Kenn; eight great grandchildren, Matthew Bavuso, Jacob Bavuso, Elle Bavuso, Em Bavuso, Samantha Tyler, Jacob Biggs, Carter Dodge and Ava Dodge; a brother-in-law, Bobby Carter of Farmville, wife Betty Jo, plus many nieces and nephews who were adored and Florence “Cookie” Seamster, who was a good friend and a jewel in her life for a lifetime. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of almost 59 years, Charles M. Carter; brother, Melvin G. Stanley and two sisters, Virginia Dilorenzo and Anne Berry. 

She graduated from Buckingham Central High School in 1944 and Bookkeeping Business School and was first employed as bookkeeper at the Hub department store. 

Margaret also worked for the Virginia Dark Fired Tobacco Association for 42 years and worked the Election polls for the same number of years. She also served on the Prince Edward County Welfare Board for seven years. 

In her youth she was Miss Sesquicentennial of Farmville and also was married on Dec. 25 in the year of 1948 at the Manse of the Farmville Presbyterian Church on Second Avenue. This is the church that they both were members of until their deaths. At the church she taught Sunday school, a member of the Women of the Church and on the Fellowship Committee. 

In her spare time she was an avid bridge player in at least three clubs at a time. 

Visitation will be at Puckett Funeral Home on March 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a church service on March 21, at 1 p.m., in Farmville Presbyterian Church followed by a graveside service at Westview Cemetery.
