FARMVILLE – A Farmville man missing since last Tuesday has been found alive, Farmville Police Chief Doug Mooney announced in a Friday evening email.

“William Henry Hairston was found by Roanoke County police, wandering in woods after his vehicle was discovered abandoned nearby,” Chief Mooney's email stated.

The police department had announced late Thursday morning that it was looking for the 70-year old Hairston, who has a medical condition requiring medication and had been last seen leaving his home in the 1100 block of South Main Street at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, in his maroon 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Police said Hairston was headed to CVS last Tuesday, located just across the street from his residence, to get a pack of cigarettes and had not been seen since.

Hairston, who is on medication for Dementia and Alzheimer's, according to police, was reportedly seen at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 45 in Goochland on

Thursday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m., asking directions to Farmville, and apparently confused.

On a previous occasion when Hairston had been reported missing, police noted last week, he had been found in Hanover County, unaware of where he was.

His family told police last week they believed Hairston might have been heading to visit relatives in Maryland.

Chief Mooney thanked media coverage “that resulted in him being found alive.”
