Meteor Observation Event At High Bridge
Published 5:05 pm Thursday, December 6, 2012
High Bridge Trail State Park will host a meteor-observing astronomy event on Thursday, Dec. 13, beginning on High Bridge at 6:30 p.m. The closest parking lot to High Bridge is at River Road, from there you will need to travel about one mile to the bridge. A casual one-mile walk takes about 30 minutes, please plan your visit accordingly.
The annual Geminid Meteor shower is expected to put on a better than average show this year because it coincides with the dark skies associated with the new moon. Most meteor showers result from comet debris, but the Geminids are related to heavier, denser particles from an asteroid. As a result, the meteors they produce can be brighter than others.
Participants in this event will also hear the mythological story, “The Rescue of Andromeda.” A sky tour will point out related constellations and other objects of interest in the night sky, including the bright planet Jupiter. Binoculars and a telescope will be on hand for those who want a closer look.
People who wish to bring lawn chairs and blankets can simply sit back and enjoy the sky. All attendees should anticipate increased wind on the bridge and remember to dress warmly and bring drinking water.
