4-H Members Studies Carnivorous Plants

Prince Edward 4-H members who are participating in the Junior Master Gardener program recently learned about carnivorous plants that are native to the United States. Liz Dunn, a member of the Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners, spoke to the 4-H'ers about Venus Fly Traps, Pitcher Plants, and Sundews, all of which she grows at home. The members got to dissect several Pitcher Plant leaves, finding lots of smelly, decomposing insects inside along with several live ladybugs which quickly made their escape. The Junior Master Gardeners are planning to start their own carnivorous plant collection and possibly even offer some educational programs to the community. The Prince Edward 4-H Junior Master Gardeners are under the direction of volunteers Josie Fletcher and Chris Bianco.
