Hilda L. Maxey Smith Newton, 81 of New Canton, was called to her heavenly home on Sept. 25, while surrounded by family in her home. She was born Jan. 18, 1942, a daughter of the late William and Lula Maxey of New Canton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Earl Newton.
Her hobbies included going to yard sales and refinishing furniture. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will leave a legacy of a kind, self-less heart; she was always doing things for others. She loved to worship with her church family. She was a woman of remarkable faith and a life-long member of Welcome Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by her three children: Thomas “Smitty” Smith Jr. (Sharon), Betty Palmore (J.D.) and Michael Smith; six grandchildren: Chris Smith (Becca), David Smith (Jesi), Amy Land (Matt), Kimberly Jamerson (Jonathan), Reva Allen (Brian) and Jessica Price (Chad) and 11 great- grandchildren: Clayton, Kinsley, Chloe, Eli, Ryan, Lauryn, Noah, Kate, Colt, Stuart and Thomas. She is also survived by four sisters: Lillian Purdy, Rose Tyree, Elizabeth Elder of Lynchburg and Ruby Nettles of South Carolina; and two brothers: Tommy Maxey of Scottsville and John Maxey of New Canton.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Smith; granddaughter, Kelsey Palmore; a sister, Doris Thomason; five brothers, William Maxey, Kenneth Maxey, Charlie Maxey, Howard Maxey, and Roy Maxey and the father of her children, Thomas Smith Sr.
