High Bridge To Hold Veterans Day Program

High Bridge Trail State Park invites area veterans and their families to participate in a Veterans Day reception and program on Sunday Nov. 11. The reception will take place at the Farmville Train Station on West Third Street in Farmville between 1 and 5 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Walker's Diner and drink refreshments will be provided by the Friends of High Bridge Trail State Park. The Friends of High Bridge Trail will also provide the opportunity to bid on a variety of silent auction items during the event.
Shuttles will be provided from the Train Station to High Bridge. The last shuttle will run from the Train Station at 4 p.m. and the last shuttle will run from High Bridge at 5 p.m. No pets will be allowed on the shuttles. History based programs will be provided at High Bridge from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The focus of the programs will be the historical significance of the deaths of James Dearing and Thomas Smyth, the last Confederate and Union General officers to die in the American Civil War.
Park guests are also invited to enjoy the trail by traveling the trail from River Road to High Bridge. Longwood ROTC members and volunteers will be on hand at the River Road parking area between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to provide assistance to those who may need help traversing the .9 of a mile to High Bridge. Although the activities will focus on honoring veterans, all of the activities will be open to the public.
