Dukes Provide No Answer For Central's Power Game

The Cumberland High School football team's hopes for a happy homecoming were dashed by Central of Lunenburg on Friday night in a 48-6 loss to the Chargers.
“Things didn't go as planned,” said CHS head coach David Sullivan. “Central was the fastest team we've seen so far this year. They're big, physical and quick. Everything good football teams have.”
Unable to move the ball, the Dukes played on the defensive side of the ball for most of the night. Cumberland fared well against Central's spread, but the Dukes had much more trouble against the Chargers' double-wing formation.
“Once they went to the double wing, it was all over,” said Sullivan. “We couldn't move the ball offensively. They had a fast and athletic defense that really got after it.”
Central led 32-0 at the half. Cumberland scored its only touchdown on the night on a one-yard run by Kevon Jones. The Dukes were able to move the ball after a change at quarterback, and after the things were well in hand.
Senior quarterback Bo Winbush, who had four interceptions on the night was moved to wide receiver in favor of junior varsity call-up EJ Allen.
The switch appeared to be an effective one for both new and old quarterback. Allen and Winbush connected four times for 72 yards.
“We're having to look at our options right now,” said Sullivan. “Bo is a really good receiver, and that may be where we go. We didn't realize how fast we could bring EJ along, and he's done quite well when he's had the opportunity.
“It's definitely no shot at Bo. He's a great kid, and understands the situation, and is willing to do whatever helps out the team the most.”
Cumberland will travel to Buestone on Friday night. The Dukes will not be playing the Bluestone of old.
“They are more athletic and are coached very well. They get after it on defense and blitz almost the entire time. The first thing we've got to get the kids to realize is that this is not the same old situation, and any team that goes to Bluestone thinking it will be a gimmie, will receive a not so pleasant surprise.”
