CUMBERLAND – Opportunities for students inside and outside the classroom were highlighted during Cumberland County's September School Board meeting.
Patrick Wilson, childcare director for the Southside Virginia Family YMCA, thanked the school and community for allowing the YMCA to become a part of the elementary school experience.
Wilson reported that the program has started the school year with five children participating, although he hoped to have a lot more kids in the future. He felt that participation would increase as more parents become aware of the program as a safe, positive place for their children to be in the afternoon.
Participating students begin their afternoon in the cafeteria. Wilson reported that the children enjoy games and “stimulating activity for their brains,” led by Y staff, enjoy a snack provided by the school and work on homework. The program runs until 6:30 p.m.
Wilson commented on the staff and administration of the elementary school, saying “we've had nothing but positive feedback from everybody. And I couldn't ask for a better school to be in.”
The program costs $130 a month. Interested parents can pick up an application packet from the elementary school office or download a copy from the elementary school website: cces.mybigcampus.net
Superintendent Dr. Amy Griffin announced that each month there would be a presentation regarding 21st Century Learning.
This month, Vince Kesner, newly hired middle school and high school German teacher, gave a brief overview of the 21st Century education model and demonstrated how it can be applied practically using examples from his own classroom.
At the end of the presentation, Dr. Giles informed board members that Kesner's students are “loving German class.”
The School Board continued its tradition of recognizing students of the month during the Board's meeting.
The elementary school Student of the Month for September was Vincent Harris, fourth grade. The middle school Student of the Month was Aleya Robert, eighth grade. The high school Student of the Month was Aaron Sims, grade 12.
Three new staff members were also introduced this month: second grade teacher Amanda Stoltzfus, middle school German teacher Vince Kesner and high school Band/Choir Director Micah Lee.
The school board also welcomed Dr. Kevin R. Dmytriw to the community, noting the importance of having quality healthcare that is easily accessible.
The Helping Hands Recognition was given this month to Lynn Pack for his organization of a benefit BBQ which raised a little over $800 to purchase school supplies for needy students.
Megan Harris, formerly the Cumberland reporter for The Farmville Herald, was also recognized with the 2012 Media Honor Roll. She was thanked for her balanced and accurate approach to sharing “both the challenges facing our schools and the success achieved by the teachers and students.”
