The Fuqua School football team continued on a sharp learning curve in its second game of the season last Friday night. The lessons came a bit harder than they did two weeks beforehand, as the Falcons dropped a 25-0 decision to Hampton Roads Academy at Gilmer Field.
“You've got to score at least once to win,” said Fuqua School head coach Lewis “Skeeter” Fore. “We weren't able to do so, but even with that, we were able to give ourselves a chance in the second half. We just couldn't take advantage of it.”
The Falcons trailed 6-0 at the half, but had to kick the ball off to start the second half. The Falcons managed to get a stop, but turned the ball back over, and HRA tailback Quicky Mock scored on a 14-yard run with 8:17 left in the third. He added his third score with six seconds left in the third on a 42-yard run around the right side.
“Going from a one to two score deficit isn't as big when you're scoring, but when you haven't scored, the second score seems to be much larger than it probably is. When they scored at the end of the third quarter, that was a little much.”
HRA scored with 5:29 left to play, and Fuqua had a scoring opportunity just before the end of the game. The drive ended on downs just shy of the goal line.
“It wouldn't have made a difference in the end result, but it would've been a positive for us to take into next week.”
Mock led all offensive players with 241 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
The Falcons were led by quarterback Antonio Gonzalez, who had 63 yards on 15 rushes. He was 4-10 passing for 46 yards with two interceptions. Al Baker had 12 carries for 37 yards, while Josh Davis had four rushes for 30 yards.
North Angle led all receivers with one catch for 37 yards.
The road will get much tougher for the Falcons this week, as they travel to Isle of Wight Academy.
“It's will be a big test for us,” said Fore. “We'll have to prepare the best we can, and see what happens. We'll have to hold onto the ball, and play a mistake-free ballgame.”
