We want to express two major concerns over the proposed “improvement” on the Back Hampden-Sydney Road which we've been driving with great pleasure for more than thirty years. The S-turns at the bottom of the hill, marked by large VDOT signs, are slated to be straightened and widened, meaning a radical and disruptive change in the landscape, a loss of large trees, and interference with natural drainage.

First concern: are the two turns “hazardous”? If you're driving too fast, of course. So straightening and widening the curves will only invite drivers to go even faster. A dubious solution to a non-problem.

Second concern: for anyone who drives the road regularly, the cathedral canopy of trees on the hill is one of the most beautiful driving experiences to be had. That magical landscape and experience is sure to be compromised, if not destroyed, by the proposed “improvements.” In more than thirty years, and thousands of trips, we've never tired of that wonderful stretch of road.

The present curves are banked and the new road surface could not be smoother. We urge VDOT to please consider seriously the benefits of leaving well enough alone.

We urge the public who share our concerns to attend the VDOT public hearing on Tuesday, September 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Farmville VDOT Shop, 1202 Andrews Drive. Thank you.
