Aug. 16 – Is it just me or does it seem like school starts earlier each year? The big yellow buses are out in full force and we are reminded to show special caution when you see one.

The start of the new school year reminds us that fall is just around the corner-and, hopefully, relief from the high temperatures we continue to experience.

We did have a couple of good rains this past week and some of the crops -especially the tobacco – have perked up a bit but I think, that for the most part, all of the gardeners and farmers have suffered because of the lack of rain.

I drove to Lynchburg yesterday and was amazed to see how many of the trees have already dropped most of their leaves. I expect this will not be a good year for tree-viewing.

The Abilene Community Club would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the community for turning out and supporting the chicken dinner last Saturday, August 11. As always, the food was delicious!

The Abilene Homemakers Club will hold their next meeting next Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Abilene Community Center. We are always happy to welcome visitors and new members so please join us next Tuesday.

The Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Farmville Train Station. We will have a program about the floods in Farmville.

Birthday wishes go out to Connie Neilson who will celebrate on Aug. 23, Derrick Johnson and Lois Pope on Aug. 25, and Susan Scruggs on Aug. 29.
