On Friday June 22, the staff and Friends Group of High Bridge Trail State Park will host a 98th birthday party for the steel viaduct constructed in 1914. The party will be held at Charley's Waterfront Cafe, located in what was Farmville's oldest tobacco warehouse, and beginning at 7 p.m. All are invited for cake and refreshments. Bob Flippen, the Park's Education Specialist, will give a PowerPoint presentation of the Willis Vail glass negatives discovered last year that detail the construction of the bridge which now serves as a scenic pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian thoroughfare crossing the Appomattox River separating Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties. Also in attendance will be the High Bridge Railroad Club with a model railroad layout. It was on June 22, 1914, that rail traffic was diverted from the original bridge supported on the brick piers to a newly completed steel viaduct used by High Bridge Trail State Park today.
