Hampden-Sydney’s Cycling Club and Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) honor fraternity joined forces to raise over $6,000 in order to buy new bikes and helmets to reward hard-working students at Cumberland Middle School (CMS).

This event marks the fourth year that Hampden-Sydney students have raised funds for the Cares for Kids Taking Flight program. Justin Stimpson ’23, President of the Cycling Club said, “I wish there was something like this when I went to Cumberland. Our goal was to empower middle schoolers to develop strong study habits and positive behavior. Middle schoolers earned a ticket from January to April for a chance to win a bike every time they turned in a homework assignment or were recognized for good behavior. It was a great event and I look forward to raising funds for next year!” Leighton Holm, vice president of ODK said, “So many students are struggling to stay motivated in school, so we wanted to continue this project which aims to incentivize the kids and encourage them to work hard. It was truly a pleasure to be a part of this event!”

In April, Cumberland students excitedly gathered to witness the raffle drawing and announcement of the winners. Twenty-three lucky (and hardworking) students took home brand-new bikes and helmets. Sandy Cooke said, “It has been a joy working with these Hampden-Sydney students and watching their ideas come to life while inspiring the children of Cumberland County.”
