Community Forum On Civil War Set At SVCC

On Monday, April 16, Dr. Ronald Heinemann, Professor Emeritus of History at Hampden-Sydney College; Linda Lipscomb, Site Director of the Museum of the Confederacy – Appomattox; and Dr. Robert Owens, Associate Professor of History at SVCC will share their views about the American Civil War and the commemoration of its 150th anniversary at a community forum. This event, sponsored by the Charlotte County Sesquicentennial Committee, will be held at Southside Virginia Community College, 200 Daniel Road, in Keysville from 7 pm to 9 pm and is free and open to the public.
Dr. Heinemann has taught American history classes at Hampden-Sydney for 44 years. A graduate of Dartmouth College with a PhD from the University of Virginia, he has written a biography of Harry Byrd and a history of Virginia in conjunction with three other Virginia historians.
Mrs. Lipscomb has worked for the Museum of the Confederacy since 2000, and has served as the Site Director at Appomattox since July 2011. Linda currently serves as the President of the Society of Women and the Civil War and is a member of the Lynchburg Civil War Round Table and the Women's Club of Appomattox.
Dr. Robert Owens has taught History, Political Science, Religion, and Leadership at Southside Virginia Community College since 2002. In addition to his undergraduate degrees, Dr. Owens has a Masters Degree in Religious Education, a Masters Degree in History, and a PhD in Organizational Leadership. He is also the author of a widely published weekly opinion column.
The forum will be moderated by Stephen Walker, an instructor of history at SVCC. Stephen is a Longwood University graduate with a Masters Degree in American History from VCU. He currently serves as the Charlotte County Sesquicentennial Committee chairman.
