H-SC To Present Theater Nohgaku

Published 2:58 pm Thursday, March 8, 2012

On Monday, March 19, Theatre Nohgaku will perform the chamber piece Atsumori at H-SC as part of the Hampden-Sydney College Music Series. Noh, one of the oldest continuing stage arts, combines highly stylized dance, chant, music, mask, and costume with intense inner concentration and physical discipline, creating a uniquely powerful theatrical experience.

Theatre Nohgaku's mission is to share Noh's beauty and power with English speaking audiences and performers. With partial support from the Japan Foundation New York, Theatre Nohgaku will visit classrooms and present workshops to introduce students to the fundamental components of Noh music including voice and the four instruments (taiko, otsuzumi, kotsuzumi and nohkan). Their visit is part of a new initiative to present smaller scale productions in both Japanese and English in order to share Noh with new and wider audiences worldwide.

Led by Artistic Director Richard Emmert, the performance will begin at 7:30 PM in Crawley Forum. This event is free and open to the community.
