Two Die In Crash

CUMBERLAND — Two Cumberland County women were killed in a single-vehicle accident Monday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police.

State police were called to the scene on Route 45, less than a mile south of Route 631, at 1:55 p.m., according to a press release from Public Relations Director Corinne Geller.

The report states, “A 2001 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling south on Route 45 when it ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle then crossed back over the road, crossed the centerline, and ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle struck a fence and a tree before overturning.”

State police report that both the driver, Dakota D. Blanton, 19, of Cartersville, and her passenger, Nelmesha S. Hampton, 26, of Cartersville, died at the scene. Neither one was wearing seatbelts, according to police.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
