Susan Michael Harwood, 76, of Farmville, Virginia, died on Monday, July 20, 2020 in Lynchburg, Virginia. Susan was born on June 29, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, where she was also raised. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1966, with a degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management. She was the first woman to enter the Management Training Program at United Virginia Bank, where she went on to become a Vice President. She had a long, successful career in banking and was able to retire early at 55 years of age. Susan was active in her community.
She was a previous Rector of the Board of Visitors at Longwood College. She was a docent at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia and also trained incoming docents. She transcribed children’s books for the National Braille Association. Susan was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing in different bridge clubs over the years. Susan also volunteered in multiple organizations and constantly helped friends and family, often behind the scenes. She enjoyed yoga, Pilates and being outside for walks and exercising. She was a supporter of the Southside Virginia YMCA and enjoyed teaching many classes there. She especially loved traveling and did so all over the country and the world with her husband, Scott. She cherished her time on the river near Montross and while visiting Sanibel Island every winter.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Rae, and her sister, Debbie. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Scott Martin Harwood; her sister, Judith; her niece, Hanna (Michael); her nephew, Seth; her great-niece, Micah; her stepson, Scott (Cindy), her stepdaughter, Kim; and her step grandson, Timmy.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Westview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Southside Virginia YMCA, the Central Virginia Regional Library, or the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
