The Farmville Town Council honored the late Willie Tranza “Shorty” Jennings, a man known for his love of service to others, with a resolution of respect during its Wednesday, July 8, meeting.

Jennings, the first Black police officer on the Farmville Police Department, died at the age of 85 June 11.

“His integrity, honor, and values earned him the respect of the entire community,” Town Manager Dr. Scott Davis said during the meeting.

In addition to his time serving Farmville as a police officer, Jennings owned and operated Jennings Taxicab in the town from 1982 until 2000.

“He was a ‘people person’ who loved and enjoyed meeting and talking to people; and was a dedicated family man whose love and commitment will leave a lifelong legacy,” the resolution stated.
