For the first time, the Southside Boys’ Track Championship is coming home to Prince Edward County Middle School. The team managed to set a conference record and break several of their own school records in the process, while claiming the trophy during the Southside Conference boys track and field championship on Thursday, April 24.
“To be honest, winning is always a great feeling,” said Prince Edward Head Coach Louis Gould III. “(I) can’t even deny that you feel good as a coach to see your team win a championship. I’m just happy to see them happy. It’s all for them and to build their confidence for the next level.”
And it wasn’t just the Southside Conference Championship that the Prince Edward Middle team walked away with on Thursday. This year’s 4×100 team of Jazil Lyles, Jaylin Boyd, Zymere Evans and Jadai Green finished in 46.7 seconds, the fastest time in conference history. The 4×200 team of Jeremiah Smith, Zymere Evans, Jadai Green and Jazil Lyles also broke their own middle school record of 1:40 seconds. Malaa’Chi Alford broke the middle school shotput record, with a length of 44.10. Gould added that Javonte Holmes and Justin Morning also contributed to the championship, as each placed in all of their events.
Gould also pointed out that team members are doing work in the classroom, as well as on the track. Out of the 16 members of this year’s team, 11 are honor roll students at Prince Edward Middle.
Gould also praised the Prince Edward Middle girls track team for their work this season.
“Our girls track and field team was very young this year,” Gould said. “Although they didn’t win the championship, next year is very promising for them.”
What happens next for Prince Edward Middle?
So now the boys team has won the Southside Conference Championship for the first time in school history. What’s next? Well, that depends on how many team members have the time to continue.
“There is a regional invitational in Richmond that the team is considering entering in May,” Gould said. But it’s just a question of timing. “Most of our boys team are off to football (practice) in May, while some prepare for travel basketball in (the) summer.”
