Barely four months ago, Luther Cifers was being told he had won the special election for the 10th State Senate District. Now this week, he was standing beside Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, watching his bill get signed into law.

During this year’s Assembly session, Cifers filed SB1486, which is designed to protect the personal information of students.

“This bill closes a technical gap in existing law to ensure our children’s personal information stored on school issued digital devices is adequately protected,” Luther Cifers explained in a statement posted to his social media account. “For me, it also represents a first “lap around the track”, in which our team successfully took legislation from draft to passage, which is important as we contemplate bills to bring in 2026.”

Specifically, the bill establishes certain enumerated requirements for the protection of student personal information on school-issued devices.

“My hope is that we repeat this process with some important legislation next year,” Cifers said. “The first step is to understand your priorities, which is why my team and I are spending so much time in the localities of District 10. If you haven’t seen us in your neck of the woods yet, you will soon.”
