Later this week, the Town of Dillwyn will once again come together for Hope Day, an event dedicated to recognizing cancer survivors and caregivers. That’ll take place on Saturday, April 19, starting at 10 a.m. at Ellis Acres, located at 245 Camden Street. Town officials say this annual gathering is both a celebration and symbol of remembrance and community support.
A Tradition Rooted in Hope
Hope Day was established in April 2014 during the American Relay for Life. It began with then-mayor Linda Paige, a cancer survivor herself, who declared April as Hope Month. From there, Hope Day was created as a way to honor those battling cancer, remember those lost, and celebrate the strength of survivors and family.
For Donna McRae-Jones, a main organizer of the event, Hope Day holds deep personal significance. After losing her sister to cancer at just 11 years old, Donna’s loss shaped her dedication to the cause. Since 2014, she has helped organize Hope Day to ensure no survivor or loved one feels alone in their journey.
A Hope Day of Recognition
Each year Hope Day has welcomed attendees with a variety of activities aimed at fostering connection and support. From sharing stories to having lunch, everybody is made to feel welcome and supported by people of the Dillwyn community. One anticipated moment for Hope Day is their guest speaker’s speech– by Reverend Billy Swan from Salem Church, the guest speaker nearly every year since 2014. The event will also feature recognition of the newest and oldest cancer survivors, along with a selection of door prizes donated by local businesses.
A key part of the event is the “Paint the Town Purple” initiative, which encourages residents and businesses to decorate in purple, the color for cancer awareness and survival. Additionally, Pino’s restaurant will host Purple Dining Out on Wednesday, April 16 where a profit share of the day’s earnings will go toward supporting cancer-related causes.
Community Support Makes it Possible
The event has thrived all these years because of the generous support from the local community. The Dillwyn Town Council provides financial backing, while businesses such as Pinos, Laredos, Farish Hardware Supply, Kiss My Butt BBQ, and local hairdressers contribute through donations and services. These Organizers greatly appreciate the collective efforts and local support that come together to make Hope Day a meaningful and impactful event.
How to join the Hope Day
The event is open to everyone, from cancer survivors to friends, family, and community members looking to show their support. Whether attending the event, dining at Pinos, or Painting the town Purple, there are many ways to be part of this special day.
As the town of Dillwyn gathers again this year for the celebration, the message remains clear: hope, community, and support can make all the difference.
