On Saturday, April 5, the welding fabrication team of Martayvon Epps, Grayson Talbott and Ethan Walter from Buckingham Career and Technical Education Center competed in the 60th SkillsUSA Virginia State Championships in Roanoke. The team placed second out of twelve very competitive fab teams from across the Commonwealth and brought home the silver medal to Buckingham County High School.

During the very difficult and demanding contest the team used their blueprint reading, fabrication and welding skills to fit-up and weld/cut five projects using five different metal working processes, all under strict time constraints.

“Don’t hesitate to get out of your comfort zone,” Buckingham senior Martayvon Epps said. “You will never know what great potential you hold or where that door will lead you.”

Following graduation from Buckingham County High in May, Epps is looking to continue his welding career at a trade school for welding. Walter will be attending The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding and Talbott will be attending Virginia Military Institute.
