Over and over again, the Cumberland High track team proved they’re one of the best this past weekend. Taking part in the state competition, multiple members placed in the Top 10 in their respective divisions.
Kameron Brown placed fifth in the Boys Triple Jump, while coming in eighth for the Boys Long Jump. His teammate Jayden Eppes came in eighth during the Boys 55 meter run, while Jayden Thomas finished seventh in the Boys Pole Vault. Cumberland Head Coach Kenneth Jassey said the original plan was for Brown to compete in pole vault and high jump, but the coaching staff decided to save his legs for the outdoor track season.
On the girls side, it was Jayla Augustin finishing seventh in the Girls Shot Put, while Makayla Eppes finished sixth in Girls 55 Meters and Ma’kiya Hawkins came in eighth in the Girls 300 meter run. As part of the Girls Pole Vault event, it was Jazmine Petty coming in fifth and Hawkins finishing sixth. The Girls 4×200 meter relay came in fifth, behind a strong performance from Jazmine Petty, Makayla Eppes, Kamira Holman and Ma’kiya Hawkins. Overall, the girls team finished 11th at the meet, with the boys team coming in 14th.
Looking back on Cumberland High season
“Very proud of our teammate and our efforts,” Jassey said. “The 2025 Cumberland High Track program did very well with being a super young team of boys and girls. One lone senior being Kameron Brown, leading freshman and sophomores was tremendous. Our teams fought hard and trained very well to gain an identity that all teams must do every year. Right now we’re a competitive group that’s touching on championship character.”
He also praised the coaching staff’s work with developing the young Cumberland High track team.
“They understand more about time management as well the disciplines of their events with respect,” Jassey said. “The pieces to a team puzzle constantly came together. They demonstrated toughness, smarts, and understand their strengths, with areas that recommend more repetition. They did outstanding in their growth process for being very young.”
