1934-2025
A father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved his family dearly. Wiley’s gift was his ability to make people laugh and the fact that he never met a stranger.
He was born in Buckingham County on Oct. 27, 1934 to Richard Frank and Emma Raikes Allen. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Feb. 24. Deeply rooted in the community; Wiley was born, raised and passed away all in the same
home.
He was one of 13 children. Wiley is preceded in death by his 10 brothers: Lynn, George, Acie, Billy, Charlie, John, Jimmy, Richard Jr., Henry and Roy and his two sisters: Katie Allen Dunkum and Lucille Allen Dunkum.
Wiley went to school until the 8th grade and was drafted in the United States Army in 1954.
He served 6 years in the military including time spent in Germany. He received his GED while in the service. He was in the “Cold War” and enjoyed telling stories about his time in service.
After his service in the Army; he returned home, became a welder, married his next-door neighbor and the love of his life, Linda. Wiley and Linda spent 64 years together. They had two children; Monte Allen (Pennie), and Vonda Wharam (Curtis). Though Wiley loved yard saling, hosting events at Allen’s Lake, “shooting the bull” with friends, and feeding any animal; his favorite thing was spending time with his five grandchildren; Drew Allen, Megan Crickenberger (Mitch), Brittney Mitchell (Thomas), Molly Midkiff (Drew), and Kelby Wharam (Sam) as well as his great grandchildren; Nicholas, Jase, Emma, Elizabeth, Eva, Presley, Austyn, Levi, Bo, Lily, Lowyn, and number 12 on the way.
Wiley was a true jack of all trades. He enjoyed driving a school bus for the school system, selling cars, and working for his brother, Billy. He was a member of Browns Chapel, volunteered for the Dillwyn Rescue Squad and often could be found at Gene Dixon Ball Park. Sports were a favorite hobby of his and Wiley enjoyed watching all of his family play, never missing a single game. He also had two special fur babies that he thought were humans; Sandy and Ladybug.
A special thank you to his wonderful caretaker, Katie Grammer and to the Hospice of the Piedmont for their service. Our family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and support shown during this difficult time. Wiley will be greatly missed but will forever live on through the stories shared by the people who loved him most.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, interment with Veterans Funeral Honors will follow in the Browns Chapel Church Cemetery. The family received friends on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Caring for Creatures.
