Race dates have been set and now the planning starts. Three times this year, the Town of Farmville will be a site where hundreds of competitors and their families visit. Specifically High Bridge Trail State Park.
Virginia State Parks announced this week that High Bridge will be the site of three of the 25 total races in their Adventure Series this year, with one in May, one in June and a final one in October. It gives the town a chance to host more events, as all three begin and end in the downtown area.
“The Virginia State Parks Adventure Series is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the thrilling sporting events our state parks offer,” said Steve Boyd. He works as a promotions manager with Virginia State Parks. “This series includes something for everyone—whether you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete—with events ranging from 5Ks and adventure races to triathlons and ultramarathons. Join us for an unforgettable race weekend and experience the incredible beauty and activities our parks provide!”
Beyond High Bridge Trail State Park
All total, there are 20 races in the series, taking part across 11 state parks. There are triathlons, mountain biking races, sprints, kayaking and other competitions. Farmville’s contribution includes a biking time trial on Sunday, May 18; a Night Train Ultra Marathon on Saturday, June 14 and the High Bridge Half Marathon and 5k on Saturday, Oct. 4.
There’s a couple changes from previous years, in that there’s a broader range of race difficulties and distances. Officials say that’s to offer something for everyone, from beginner to expert level.
Adventure Series participants win prizes by earning points in the competition category or the achievement category. These prizes include Virginia State Parks gift cards, cash and REI gift cards.
So how does this work?
People can compete in one of two categories for the adventure series. The first is the Competition Category, where you’re scored on your Top 8 race point levels. That’s based on running in all races in a given year. The Achievement Category, meanwhile, is scored on the number of races you complete. At the end of each race and the end of the season, racers in both categories will receive prizes.
“All racers will be eligible for performance awards and random giveaways,” said High Bridge Trail State Park Manager Daniel Jordan. “We are excited to have three races that highlight different ways to enjoy the park’s trail. Whether you walk, jog or bike during the day or night for these races, we know you’ll enjoy the park while connecting with nature.”
In terms of the benefits, they come in a couple different ways for Farmville. These racers and their families travel long distances, some from out of state. A total of 11 states were represented in last year’s competition. They fill up hotel rooms and eat at local restaurants. And then there’s the simple benefit of just drawing more people to town, to see what’s here.
