Carroll W. “Buck” Mumma, 79 of Charlotte Court House, passed away on Feb. 4, at his home surrounded by his family.

An obituary does not easily present the essence of the deceased person. Someone is much more than a collection of dates, degrees, and employment. Carroll was a unique man, a son, husband, father, teacher, friend and fierce competitor.

Born May 17, 1945 to Victor Reichard and M. Evelyn Green Mumma in Hagerstown, Maryland. He spent his formative years in Boonesboro, Maryland. He filled his time with Boy Scouts, riding his bike all over the county, hunting, fishing, camping and playing in the Rohrersville Band. He graduated from Boonesboro High and went on to pursue a degree in chemistry later he would obtain his masters from the University of Delaware.

As a teacher he kindled the spark in his students for a love of science. He loved teaching high school and his philosophy was if you treated students with respect and talked to them as the young adults they were, you’d never have a problem. He never did.

In the summers he ran his own construction company building beautiful, affordable houses.

He worked hard and played harder. Weekends would see him load his horses and English Pointer Bird dogs heading for the nearest field trial. Over the years he raised, trained and campaigned some amazing dogs. At the end of a long day riding, he enjoyed a good cigar and a glass of Johnnie Walker Red Scotch,

All his life he loved the ladies—young, old and in between, he could make every cashier, clerk, waitress and librarian feel attractive and special. He was known for his jokes, quick smile and willingness to help anyone in need.

Carroll is survived by the love of his life, Jo Ann, with whom he shared 36 years of love,

laughter, and companionship; a son, Robert Mumma and his wife, Kristy; grandson, Jake of Elkridge, Maryland; a son, Adam Mumma of Charlotte Court House, who he considered his best friend, Adam filled his Dad’s last years with companionship, laughter and love. Also surviving is a brother, Alan Mumma of Mankato, Minnesota; four fur babies, Daisy, Molly, Mandy and Scrappy; and a grand dog, Otis.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., on March 8, at the Old Pig, Farmville. Memorial contributions can be made to Tunnels to Towers.

The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville is in charge of arrangements.
