On Wednesday, January 15, I looked up from my copy of the Herald. It seemed the sun shone a little brighter, the song of the sparrow just a bit sweeter. The front page article on the fences fiasco restored my faith in humanity.
Sallie Amos stood fast before the kraken of bureaucratic thinking about fences and saved us all from a future of paperwork, unnecessary expense, and unending regulation and petty foggery. While a statue in a prominent town location may be a bit over the top, (but just a bit) I think an award is certainly in order.
I envision the Amos Award, a struck bronze medal with a figure in medieval armor, sword in one hand, dragon head in the other. It could be awarded annually to one citizen who has gone above and beyond to control waste, resist overreach, and provide solutions of common sense and effectiveness.
