Sophomore Amor Harris hit a pull-up jumper with five seconds on the clock to vault the Longwood women to a 56-51 victory over Radford in Big South action at the Joan Perry Brock Center on Wednesday.

Tied at 51-all with 12.9 seconds left, the Lancers worked the ball to Harris on a sideline out-of-bounds play, who knocked in an 18-footer for the the lead.

“That wasn’t exactly how we drew it up,” Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery said of the Harris shot. “But she kept the ball in her hands and saw that opening and was able to knock it down.

“I asked her afterwards if she knew it was in and she was like yes, she knew it was in when it left her hand.”

The Lancers then forced a five-second call on the ensuing Radford possession following a timeout and Malea Brown hit a free throw to extend the lead to three. The Highlanders were then whistled for a technical foul when Kirah Dandridge called a timeout that Radford didn’t have and Kiki McIntyre canned both of her foul shots to account for the final.

Streak continues for Longwood women

The win, Longwood’s eighth straight, improves the Lancers to 15-5 overall and 6-0 in the Big South. It’s the first time since the 1999-00 season that LU has won its first six games in conference play. The loss for Radford drops the Highlanders to 6-13 and 3-3 in the league, snapping a three-game winning streak.

“On a night where we didn’t shoot the ball extremely well, we found some other ways to win,” Lang-Montgomery said. “I’m really proud of our execution at the free-throw line tonight, in close games, those free throws are important. We held our own on the glass, and Amor Harris again for us tonight.”

Harris scored a team-best 15 points on 7-for-16 shooting and McIntyre added 14, including three third-quarter 3-pointers, and Mariah Wilson added nine points and three assists, to help Longwood escape with the win.

“We’re able to get production from a lot of different positions and so it goes back to the depth of our team and the buy in. We’re confident with any lineup on the floor that can get defensive stops or can score the ball for us.”

Neither team held a lead larger than six points in a game that featured 11 tie scores and eight lead changes.

A Wilson jumper with 7:44 to play gave Longwood a 46-43 advantage, but Radford responded with a Taylor Napper bucket and Dandridge later tied it at 47-47 at the six-minute mark. Otaifo Esenabhalu converted a putback to help Longwood regain the lead midway through the fourth.

A pair from the line by Wilson pushed the lead to 51-47 prior to a Joe Williams driving layup and more Napper freebies knotted the score at 51, setting the scene for the Harris shot.

Longwood shot just 34.5 percent from the floor on the night, but made up for it, hitting 13-of-16 foul shots.

Joi Williams scored a game-high 19 points to lead Radford in a losing effort, its six loss in the last seven against the in-state Lancers.

‘We know the road is tough’

The Longwood women next travel to USC Upstate Saturday at 4 p.m.

“We know the road is tough and we know that we are going to get everybody’s best game going forward,” Lang-Montgomery said. “We have to continue to work on our execution in the halfcourt. We still have to stay aggressive defensively, find ways to create offense for ourself and ultimately put the ball in the basket when it’s all said and done.”
