Jean Word Smith of Richmond passed away peacefully Christmas Eve 2024, at Westminster Canterbury. A native of Buckingham County, Jean was born June 8, 1926, the daughter of John P. and King C. Word. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, R. Preston Smith; and sister, Doris W. Pollard.
Jean is survived by her children, Debbie Marshall (Larry Rogers), of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, John P. Smith (Terri), of Greenville, South Carolina, and Stephen D. Smith, of Richmond; grandchildren, Allan Smith, of Charlottesville, Bryan Smith ( Lauren), of Arlington, and Draper Smith, of Greenville, South Carolina; and great-grandson, Gerrit Smith.
Jean was a faithful member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church and especially enjoyed her time as a member of the Endeavor Sunday School Class. She was a supporter of her children’s activities as a room mother and den mother in their early years. Jean was very proud of her children and grandchildren, and recognized their individual gifts, interests and personalities.
Jean had a twinkle in her eye to go along with her feisty personality. She was fiercely independent. Jean was blessed to have so many treasured friends and neighbors past and present who gave her their love and attention. The family is grateful to the members of Hatcher Memorial and her friends and neighbors for keeping in touch with visits, calls and cards.
Years ago, Jean decided to donate her body to the Virginia State Anatomical Program and her wish was fulfilled. This gift will have lasting benefits for the education of health professionals and the quality of medical care for future generations.
Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, with visitation to follow in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, 2300 Dumbarton Road, Richmond, VA. 23228.
