Now that we’ve passed Christmas and started into a new year, there’s still a lot happening in Farmville and the surrounding areas. Here’s a look at the celebrations and other events happening throughout the region in the calendar.
JANUARY 5
JUBILEE DAY – The Prince Edward branch of the NAACP will celebrate Jubilee Day at Forest Baptist Church on Sunday, Jan. 5. The event, which begins at 2 p.m., will feature Rev. Robert Waker and the NAACP branch’s officers for 2025 will be installed by Melinda Toney, Deputy Clerk of the Prince Edward Circuit Court. The church is located at 1097 Meherrin Road in Meherrin.
MEAT ALTERNATIVE COOKING CLASS – The Farmville Seven Day Adventist Church will hold a cooking class on Sunday, Jan. 5, all focused on plant-based recipes. The event runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will be held in the church cafeteria, located at 2086 Cumberland Road in Farmville. To register, call or text 434-395-9237.
JANUARY 7
BEEKEEPER MEETING – The Heart of Virginia Beekeepers will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. That’ll take place at the Prince Edward County Extension Office, located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. JANUARY 11
BEEKEEPERS CONFERENCE – Registration is open for the Heart of Virginia Beekeepers third annual Beekeepers Conference. That’ll be held on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hampden-Sydney College. The keynote speaker is Paul Kelly, Research and Apiary Manager at the University of Guelph Honey Bee Research Centre in Ontario. JANUARY 16
CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP – The Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group will meet on Thursday, Jan. 16 at Christ Community Church in Crewe. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and the church is located at 1012 W. Carolina Avenue.
JANUARY 17
MOAA MEETING – The Military Officers Association of America will hold their monthly self-pay lunch meeting on Friday, Jan. 17, starting at 12:30 p.m. That’ll take place at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe in Farmville. MOAA is a community service organization and welcomes all military officers( active or retired), spouses , widows, and/or adult family members. This month’s speaker is Keith Harvey, author and historian, whose expertise includes working at the American Civil War Museum in Appomattox.
JANUARY 18
BENEFIT CONCERT – A benefit gospel concert will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18, starting at 2 p.m. That will be for Deaconess Joyce Booker, a cancer fighter at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cumberland County. The benefit will feature musical selections from Denise & The Traveling Aires, The Anointed Voices of Rice and the Traveling Angels of Farmville. GOSPEL CONCERT – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, the Kappa Rho Omega Chapter, will be sponsoring a Gospel music concert on Saturday, Jan. 18, starting at 3 p.m. That’ll be held at Prince Edward County High School, located at 35 Eagle Drive in Farmville. Performances will be provided by Anointed Sound, Cornerstone Baptist Church Male Choir, More Than Blessed, Voices For Christ, New Jerusalem Baptist Church Choir, Baptist Union Men’s Chorus and the Royal Supremes. The Master of Ceremony will be Rev. Dr. Cavell Phillips. A free will offering will be collected to support the sorority’s scholarship fund.
JANUARY 20
NAACP MEETING – The Prince Edward branch of the NAACp will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. That’ll be held at the Moton Museum in Farmville.
JANUARY 25
AUTHOR TALK – Powhatan author Tom Walton will be at the Farmville library on Saturday, Jan. 25 to discuss his three books of poetry. The event will start at 2 p.m., with Tom doing a reading before starting a discussion with the audience. Refreshments will be served after the discussion. The Local Author Talk series is a partnership with the Friends of the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library.
JANUARY 28
BEEKEEPERS SCHOOL – Beekeeping for Beginners School starts Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Prince Edward County Extension Office. That’s located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. Classes are held on three non-consecutive Tuesdays and one Monday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $50 per person, which includes a book, all four classes and a travel day at an apiary.
