Coming off a loss earlier in the week, there was a question how Hampden-Sydney would respond. That was quickly answered in the early minutes of Friday’s game, as the Tigers took control and didn’t let go en route to a 75-68 win over Bridgewater College.
“Great response from the guys tonight to find a way to get it done,” said Tigers Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough. “Every ODAC game is a battle and tonight was no different.”
Due to the approaching winter storm, the game had been moved up from Saturday, but the change in time didn’t slow down Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers took an early 15-10 advantage at 13:09 as junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell came off the bench and scored eight-straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers. The Tigers extended the margin to 23-15 with 10:00 on the clock as it was freshman forward John Campbell who came off the bench and scored five consecutive points. The Garnet & Grey maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the half, leading 33-27 at 4:38. By halftime, that lead had been cut to 38-32 margin.
Hampden-Sydney started the second half by outsourcing Bridgewater 15-8 to take their largest lead of the contest at 53-40 with 13:22 remaining. During this run, they got four points from Fernald, a basket by Stickney, and two three-pointers from Brazil sandwiched around a three-pointer by Radcliffe. The Garnet & Grey still led 71-59 at 1:01 after 4-6 free throws by Fernald, before the visitors made it interesting with a trio of three-pointers over the final 44-seconds. Brazil and John Campbell provided for the final margin by going 4 of 6 on several late free throws.
Breaking down the numbers
All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil led Hampden-Sydney with his game-high 18 points, including 3-7 three-pointers, adding three rebounds, two assists and a game-high two steals. Junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Shane Fernald finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Hamilton Campbell and John Campbell each contributed eight points, with Hamilton adding game-highs of five assists and two steals, and John adding four rebounds and a career-high three assists. H-SC shot 47% (27-58) from the field, including 53% (10-19) on three-pointers, and 58% (11-19) at the free throw line.
BC shot 39% (25-65) from the field, including 29% (10-35) on three-pointers, and 80% (8-10) at the line.
