Hampden-Sydney College struggles in Wednesday road loss

Junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell scored 15 points off the bench, but No. 8 Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 77-68 decision on the road at (RV)Guilford College on Wednesday night. Playing in Greensboro, North Carolina, senior guard Nick Shryock added 14 points and junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald had 13 points for the Tigers. The visitors trailed 37-29 at halftime and rallied for their only lead at 52-51 with 11:48 remaining, before the host Quakers outscored them 26-16, including 8-10 free throws over the final 1:43 for the victory. H-SC dropped to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the ODAC, while GC improved to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the ODAC, led by Luke Proctor with a game-high 19 points and Gabe Proctor with 17 points.
“Tough one tonight,” said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. “I thought we did a lot of good things, but we need to be more disciplined in a few areas to take the next step with this team.”
Breaking down the game
Hampden-Sydney, ranked No. 8 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, yielded the first 11 points of the contest to GC, getting votes in the latest poll, and the Quakers led 14-2 at 15:05 following the third early three-point field goal by Luke Proctor. The Tigers were within 17-8 with 13:22 on the clock after a jumper by Hamilton Campbell, but GC increased the margin to 23-8 at the 12:00 minute mark as the home team made its first seven three-point attempts. The Garnet & Grey battled back with a 10-3 run to close to within 26-18 with 6:35 left in the half following a basket inside from freshman forward John Campbell. The Quakers responded with seven-straight points to lead 33-18 at 4:13, but the visitors outscored the hosts 11-4 to trail 37-29 at halftime-Hamilton Campbell making a buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the half.
H-SC continued its momentum and scored the first eight points of the second half to tie the contest at 37-37 with 18:28 remaining, getting two free throws each from Fernald and Shryock, before Shryock and freshman guard Travis Stickney assisted each other on consecutive layups. The Tigers trailed 41-40 16:59 after an old-fashioned three-point play by Fernald, and the Garnet & Grey took their first and only lead at 52-51 as Hamilton Campbell scored eight-straight points for the visitors, including a pair of three-pointers. GC answered with a 15-5 run to lead 66-57 with 5:24 left to play, making three more three-pointers with two from Chase Ellis, but four free throws by All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil had H-SC within 67-61 at 3:01. The Quakers, however, secured their home win with 8-10 free throws over the final 1:43 to provide for the final margin.
Hampden-Sydney by the numbers
Hamilton Campbell led H-SC with his 15 points off the bench, adding six rebounds and a game-high four assists. Shryock finished with his 14 points for the Tigers, adding five rebounds and two steals. Fernald contributed his 13 points, along with seven rebounds and two assists. Brazil had eight points before fouling out late in the contest, while Stickney had six points, three rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals. H-SC shot 44% (24-55) from the field, including 25% (6-24) on three-pointers, and 70% (14-20) at the free throw line.
Luke Proctor led GC with his game-high 19 points, including 3-6 three-pointers, along with six rebounds and three assists. Gabe Proctor finished with his 17 points for the Quakers, including 4-6 three-pointers, along with a game-high eight rebounds, as well as three assists and two steals. Nick Farrar had 16 points and six rebounds, while Chase Ellis had 12 points, including 3-4 three-pointers, and seven rebounds off the bench. GC shot 50% (27-54) from the field, including 48% (13-27) on three-pointers, and 63% (10-16) at the line.
H-SC is scheduled to welcome ODAC member Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon, January 11, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. As a reminder, it’s free admission for all regular season home athletic contests at the College.
