Two people are in the hospital today, after an accident that took place Wednesday afternoon in Cumberland County. According to Virginia State Police, troopers were called out at noon to Cumberland Road (Route 45), after a two-car collision.

State Police say a 2000 Ford Ranger was heading northbound on Cumberland Road, north of the intersection with Atkins Road, when it suddenly crossed the centerline and struck a 2016 Honda Pilot. The Pilot ran off the right side of the road as it tried to avoid the Ranger. The Pilot’s driver, 68-year-old Farmville resident Joan L. Bland, suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital. The driver of the Ranger, 72-year-old George Hill Jr. of Dillwyn, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a nearby hospital. Both people were wearing a seatbelt, according to State Police.

“A medical issue is being looked at as a possible cause of the crash,” said Matthew Demlein. He works as public relations director for the Virginia State Police. Demlein added that the crash is still under investigation, with charges pending in the case.
